IHK police books Geelani under PSA
Indian police on Thursday arrested pro-freedom leaders in Indian-held Kashmir, including hardline Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Geelani, under the Public Safety Act and placed his moderate colleague Mirwaiz Umer Farooq under house arrest.
Mirwaiz was arrested to foil an all-party meeting called for chalking out a future course of action. Separatists have called for a strike for today (Friday).
Mirwaiz lamented the “dual stand” of New Delhi, of holding a dialogue with Pakistan over the Kashmir issue and at the same time continuing the genocide of Kashmiris and indulging in other undemocratic activities. Srinagar District Magistrate Mehraj Ahmad Kakroo confirmed Geelani’s arrest and said he has been shifted to a makeshift jail at Cheshma Shahi. Geelani and his close aide were arrested on June 20 in Kupwara. He had called for protests on June 21 against the killing of two youths in Srinagar. staff report
