Mindfulness Comes To Boston’s Financial District
Boston, MA – August 26, 2010 – Stress Reduction Consultant Gena Bean leads an ongoing eight-week Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program at The NonProfit Center near South Station in Boston.
The MBSR program has been medically documented by The Pain Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical School to relieve symptoms of stress and anxiety. Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn originally created the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Program in 1979 to address the symptoms of stress that accompany medical diagnosis. This program is now being offered around the globe to assist people to reduce their stress levels and increase their quality of life. Bean is partnering with The NonProfit Center of Boston to bring two different mindfulness based programs to the Financial District community.
“‘Mindfulness’ means being aware and present with the truth of each moment. This deep awareness allows those who practice mindfulness to make better, more healthy, choices as they address the sources of their stress.” states Bean, who completed the practicum in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in 2007. Bean offers the MBSR program every January, May, and September in the Boston area.
As our society works towards effecting an economic recovery, Boston’s Financial District is an excellent location for these classes in mindfulness skills. The eight week intensive program in MBSR systematically brings students through a process of self development that builds a “tool-box” of skills that can include: reducing stress reactions, creating self-care behaviors, acknowledging strengths and weaknesses, increasing awareness, and making decisions based on knowledge instead of making decisions based on feelings of panic. The program includes meditation, yoga, lecture, and discussion in small groups.
A free lecture explaining the concepts behind Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction will be offered on Tuesday 9/14/10 12:45pm to 1:30pm. The start date for the full eight week program in MBSR is Friday – 9/24/10. Applications for participating in the eight week MBSR program are now being accepted. The application form is available online at genabean.com/stress.html. Because of the intensive nature of the MBSR program, drop-ins for individual classes are not accepted; participation in all eight classes is required.
The intensive in MBSR is for people who are ready to embark on a journey of profound self-transformation. Drew Miller, a recently unemployed Information Technology Consultant who completed the MBSR Intensive this past July, said this about the program: ” I am now much more able to ‘roll with the punches’ thanks to the skills I learned in this class. It’s hard to express just how helpful the MBSR Intensive has been. During the program I gained the ability to see my inner strengths and to better handle whatever life throws at me. ”
For people who are interested in experiencing a more relaxed break during their work day, there is a less intensive option: Tuesday lunchtime Mindful Yoga classes. The Mindful Yoga classes are available to anyone who wants to simply let go of
tension during an hour of stretching and breathing. These Mindful Yoga classes are different from other yoga classes in gym locations. The emphasis is on learning stress reduction techniques, not on getting a workout. Mindful Yoga classes are every Tuesday 12 Noon to 1pm. Drop-in students are invited to try out a yoga class on any Tuesday for a $10 fee. People of all shapes, sizes, and flexibility levels are welcome to participate.
Bean will give a free introductory yoga class in celebration of National Yoga Month on Tuesday 9/14/10 at 12pm, just before the Stress Reduction Lecture. Pre-registration for the free yoga class is required.
Both the weekly Mindful Yoga classes, and the eight week MBSR Intensives take place at The NonProfit Center 89 South St. Boston MA 02111 (near South Station). These mindfulness programs are part of The NonProfit Center’s Wellness Program offerings to the community.
