The workshop, attended by 25 renowned dieticians from across the country, provided a holistic view on morbid obesity and bariatric surgery, which happen to be the only way to bail a morbidly obese patient out from the doldrums of further co-morbidities. Let’s talk a little bit about what’s actually causing the deaths from smoking cigarettes. For one, we know it’s not the nicotine. Rather, it’s all the nasty chemicals produced from burning tobacco. Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray is a legendary figure in the world of chemistry. He was the father of Indian School of Chemistry, a successful teacher at Presidency College and Calcutta University. Subsequently with active involvement of Acharya and whole hearted support and patronization of Kartick Chandra Bose, Bhootnath Paul, Chandra Bhusan Bhaduri and Charu Chandra Bose, the real journey of The Bengal Chemical & Pharmaceutical Works Limited began on 12th April 1901 with an authorised capital of Rs.50000/- and a subscribed capital of Rs.25,000/- and commenced its business and commercial activity from his the then residence at Upper Circular Road.

In 1905, considering the business and commercial growth of BCPW, the premises at Upper Circular found to be inadequate and manufacturing set up was shifted to Maniktala after purchasing a three acre plot with financial support from Kaviraj Upendra Nath Sen, who became the Director in 1904. During this period, various textile mills, soap, match factories, tanneries, banks etc came into being as a part of Swadeshi. But most of them were having more of a patriotic zeal rather than commercial acumen whereas BCPW became successful and famous in view of dedication, devotion and relentless effort of Acharya.

Today having blessed with Acharya and remembering His names and contributions Bengal Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals Limited (BCPL) spreaded its wing and having four factories located in Maniktala and Panihati in West Bengal, Kanpur and Mumbai with Depots in almost all the important cities of the country. The Company became sick due to various reasons and Govt of India nationalized it during 1980. It continued to remain sick. Considering the name and fame of Acharya with BCPL, Govt of India approved a Revival Package of Rs.440 crores for the Company which includes up-gradation and modernization of its obsolete production facilities to comply with WHO/GMP standard, Capacity Expansion, new product development etc. The modernization work is going on in full swing in all factories and is expected to be completed during the current fiscal year. The Company is in the path of recovery from its prolonged sickness. During the last year, the Company achieved a turnover of Rs.83 crores and the target for the current fiscal has been set at Rs.150 crores. We urge to fulfill the desire of Acharya by making the company to get a turn around and pledge to make it a profiteering unit. We feel that’s the best way to pay tribute to our founder Acharya P C Ray.
