A Fuel for football fans in India. Pernod Ricard, the world’s co-leader in wines and spirits, through its brand Seagram’s Fuel has inked an association with Liverpool FC, the renowned English football club.

The fizz that these two prominent names exude should gel well to give Indian soccer fans a lot to shout about. The Anfield club, known worldwide for its skillful players, sparkling play and outstanding record on the football field, especially the Premier League, matches the exciting and youthful category of Seagram’s Fuel.

Announcing the tie-up, Bikram Basu, Vice President- Marketing, Pernod Ricard India said: “This is Fuel’s first involvement with sports in India, and it’s fantastic to be associated with Liverpool Football Club. They are a distinguished Club with highly talented players, and supporters worldwide. The combination of the Reds and Fuel starts a winner.”

Ian Ayre, Liverpool Football Club’s Commercial Director added, “This deal represents a further commitment to engaging with our fans in India and reflects the rapidly growing popularity of the Barclays Premier League, and in particular Liverpool FC, within the country. We look forward to some exciting times with Fuel”.

As England’s most successful team with over 40 major honours, Liverpool FC goes from strength to strength as it seeks new and innovative partnerships.

Despite an immensely successful event of 2010 FIFA World Cup, chances of South Africa to host the prestigious Olympic Games in the near future are quite rare. According to an IOC official, Africa will not be able to host the Olympic Games for the coming twenty years.
Chairperson of the IOC’s coordinating committee for 2016 Rio De Janeiro Olympics, Nawal El Moutawakel stated, “There is a huge amount of work to be done besides political desire, hence the experts’ view that any realistic chance for (hosting the) Olympics in Africa is between 2030 and 2040.”For more information, you can log on to http://www.2010olympictickets.net

She also said, “I have read studies by some universities specialising in the Olympics who gave Africa between 2030 and 2040 to host the Games and that is a very realistic chance because Olympics is a different ball game.”

Controversy marred the arrival of the Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton in Lucknow on Saturday with the district administration taking exception to the participation of Sahara India in the programme. The Queen’s Baton, which arrived in Lucknow on Friday, left the city on Saturday morning for Rae Bareli en route to Allahabad to continue its journey in Uttar Pradesh.

Soon after the Baton left the KD Singh “Babu” Stadium here, it was taken to the Sahara Shahar at Gomtinagar.

Lucknow District Magistrate Anil Sagar said it was a replica of the Queen’s Baton that made its way to Sahara Shahar, where it was received by Sahara India Managing Worker, Subrata Roy Sahara. He told reporters at a crowded press conference here that he would write to the Centre in this regard.

High drama started when four vehicles of the Rae Bareli-bound convoy of the Queen’s Baton Relay (QBR) made a sudden detour from the Bandariya Bagh crossing towards Gomtinagar. The vehicles were apprehended by the police, following a chase, near the Indira Barrage. But one of the other vehicles carried the Baton to Sahara Shahar.

The Queen’s Baton Relay team, led by Lt. General (retired) Raju Kadyan, later expressed regret for the incident. The District Magistrate later summoned Lt. Gen. Kadyan, convenor Alka Lamba and project officer Shruti Menon, too expressed regret. Mr. Sagar told journalists that they clarified in writing that the baton was only a replica of the original one.

Meanwhile, Sahara India has clarified that the Baton arrived in Sahara Shahar on the instructions of the organising committee of the Commonwealth Games in India.

Sahara India said in a press release that the group’s Managing Worker Subrata Roy Sahara was one of the biggest patrons of sports in the country and was also the chairman of the Protocol Sub-Committee of the Commonwealth Games. The release said the QBR team members met Mr. Roy on Friday and the baton arrived in Sahara Shahar on Saturday, and was taken back keeping in mind its associated protocol.

Ryan Harris faces a race against time to be fit for Australia’s tour of India in October after undergoing surgery on his injured right knee.

The 30-year-old seamer suffered the injury during the fifth one-day international against England at Lord’s last week, and immediately returned to Australia. That meant he missed the upcoming Test series with Pakistan and is also doubtful for the two Test and three ODI series against India, which begins on October 2.

“Ryan Harris underwent arthroscopic surgery in Melbourne on Thursday to correct cartilage damage to his right knee,” Cricket Australia doctor Trefor James said.

“His progress will be monitored in the coming weeks to determine his availability for selection for the VB Tour of India tour in October.”

Harris’ injury continues a run of ills for Australia’s paceman after Peter Siddle and Brett Lee have both been sidelined for long periods, while Ben Hilfenhaus made his return after seven month out with a knee problem in the recently-completed tour match against Derbyshire.
