It seemed as though multiple identities and experiences had come together to hand mould the winners; and writing, as though an exercise in sheer passion, overcame their other professional commitments to rise like the proverbial phoenix.

The very well-travelled and highly outspoken master Sunanda K Datta ray spoke of encouraging a young writer from Mussourie with whom he had shared a gin and tonic several years ago…the Chief guest Ruskin Bond. It was a moment of world literature when these two were on stage; in Looking East To Look West – Lee Kuan Yew’s Mission India, Datta-Ray proposes that the Singapore’s engagement with India is not a recent phenomenon. The India-Singapore love affair, according to Datta-Ray, has had its seeds sown since Lee was a law student at Cambridge. An admirer of Nehru, the young Lee was at that time, also spearheading a political movement to overthrow British rule. Singapore is India’s second largest investor in terms of Foreign Direct Investments, beating countries with far larger economies, like the United States and Japan. Not many people know this. And even fewer know that Singapore is a net recipient of migrant workers from South Asia. These workers with their blood and sweat, build the modern Singapore that we see today. India and Singapore’s destinies have been intertwined since the conception of their national identities and one will not do without the other. Indeed, as Lee Kuan Yew said, Asia would be submerged if India did not emerge.

Indeed, when references are made to the dynamics of South East Asian politics, data Rays book will occupy pride of place.

A doctor, columnist, novelist and detective fiction writer, Kalpana Swaminathan holds the trophy aloft for fiction. She in fact did not believe it when her name was announced as the winner. Her book venus Crossing, a collection of 12 short stories does not paint India with deliberate emphasis to sell to a western world, but just sticks to sordid realities that often make the reader put the book down and think. Each story is about that moment of transit where lives intersect and get transformed into something fresh and significant. Her writing has been compared to Patrick White, which might not really uphold her brutal honesty and commitment to giving the reader an engaging true to life story.

Siddhartha sarmas ‘The Grasshoppers Run’ is a war novel for young adults set in the North-East during the Japanese invasion of India in 1944. It is the story of the friendship between an Assamese and a Naga boy, and how the tragic fallout of the invasion leads to the Assamese boy being involved in the reprisal by the indigenous people against the invaders.

Blazing a trail in a new category; it’s a most unusual book; with a most unusual title and a most real context. A forgotten chapter of history comes alive for a generation that risks being sucked into frail reading habits.

Sprightly, enthusiastic and pink-sari clad Rajni Bakshi was at her happiest best with her double trophies. Her book “bazaars, conversations and freedom” opines that the market economy can be vigorous and productive, but also amazingly stupid and degenerate. The world is now much engaged in working out how mindless markets can be made to function better with the help of other institutions. In this striking book, Rajni Bakshi insightfully explores how the working of markets can be improved through a modern version of the combination
of trade and conversation that characterizes the age-old bazaars.

It was a victorious day to the sense of perseverance and application of four minds that were going to hear a lot more about

LCD (liquid crystal display) monitors come in several architectures. One term you may see is TFT (thin film transistor) LCD. Thin film technology improves image quality and is used in all high quality computer monitors.

In addition to TFT, other terms you may see are TN, VA, and IPS.

TN (twisted nematic) technology is the most basic LCD architecture. However, TN panels are not the best for photo editing due to a limited viewing angle,(meaning that the color and contrast change fairly dramatically if your viewing angle is not dead center), and low bit depth (6-bit depth is typical).
VA (vertical alignment) architecture is an improvement over TN with improved viewing angles and support for 8-bit depth., There are several variations such as MVA (multi-domain vertical alignment), PVA (patterned vertical alignment) and ASV (advanced super view).

IPS Panels Are The Best For Photo Editing

VA architecture and its variants are an improvement over TN, but arguably the best architecture for high quality displays, (the type required for accurate photo image editing) is the IPS (in-plane switching) architecture. There are now several variants of the in-plane switching as the technology continues to advance.

These are the key advantages of IPS architecture.

1. True wide viewing angle: Accurate and consistent colors at any viewing angle
2. Real color: IPS reproduces images that are closest to the actual color ( original image = digital camera = IPS monitor)
3. Eye comfort: Less eye strains compared to VA, TN
4. Stable quality: Image onscreen is designed to remain stable when you touch the screen

Many professional IPS based LCD monitors also feature high bit-depth and ultra wide color gamuts, which we define as equal to or greater than the Adobe RGB (1998) color space.

One interesting variation of IPS is the AH-IPS architecture developed by LG Display. This type of IPS panel uses the AFFS (advanced fringe field switching). This architecture gives the best performance for smaller screens with high resolution such as those used in handheld devices such as the Apple IPad.

AH-IPS has the advantage of greater light transmission, which translates into lower power consumption. So far, this technology has been limited to small screens due to higher manufacturing costs for larger screens.

1 Mission 1 Million – Getting to the Heart of Stroke launches announcing a worldwide effort to help prevent as many as 1 million atrial fibrillation (AF)-related strokes through increased awareness and understanding. This first-of-its kind initiative calls for the submission of project ideas which can help educate and raise awareness of the increased risk of stroke with atrial fibrillation and improve management of the disease. The projects will be reviewed by experts in atrial fibrillation and then voted upon by the public – up to 32 projects will be selected to receive funding from the €1 million in awards that will be made available. Healthcare professionals can register on the 1 Mission 1 Million website (www.heartofstroke.com) to receive educational materials to support their efforts to inform patients about atrial fibrillation and the risk of stroke.

As many as three million people worldwide have an atrial fibrillation-related stroke every year; equivalent to one person every 12 seconds.1-3 One in four people aged 40 years or older develop atrial fibrillation during their lifetime, making it the most common heart rhythm abnormality.4,5 Atrial fibrillation causes the heart to beat irregularly and often at a too fast or too slow heart rate. People with atrial fibrillation are five times more likely to have a stroke than people without atrial fibrillation. In addition, atrial fibrillation -related strokes are more severe and are associated with more disability than non-atrial fibrillation strokes.1,6,7 Three out of four atrial fibrillation-related strokes can be prevented.8,9

“Many people are unaware of their increased risk and potential life changing consequences of having an atrial fibrillation-related stroke,” said Professor Roberto Ferrari, Professor of Cardiology at the University of Ferrara, Italy and expert panel member. “Through a commitment to education and the funding of community based projects, 1 Mission 1 Million has the potential to make a significant and meaningful difference for those affected by atrial fibrillation.”

1 Mission 1 Million – Getting to the Heart of Stroke is supported by leading health experts and patient organisations including the World Heart Federation (WHF), Atrial Fibrillation Association (AFA), AntiCoagulation Europe (ACE), and Stroke Alliance For Europe (SAFE) and is sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim.

“Increasing awareness can lead to earlier diagnosis of atrial fibrillation and to more patients receiving appropriate care – resulting in the potential prevention of more avoidable strokes,” said Professor Günter Breithardt, from the World Heart Federation and Expert Panel member. “Initiatives that work to prevent AF-related stroke will improve the quality of life for patients and have the potential to reduce health-related costs worldwide.”

Healthcare professionals and professional and patient groups can request educational materials on atrial fibrillation and the risk of stroke on www.heartofstroke.com. The materials will be available at no cost.

Projects can be submitted online until 31 December, 2010. The applications will then be reviewed against the campaign’s entry criteria by an Expert Panel whose members include cardiologists and patient group leaders in the area of atrial fibrillation, all of whom have expertise in supporting people with the condition. In February 2011, selected projects will be featured on www.heartofstroke.com and healthcare professionals, professional and patient groups and the public will be invited to vote on which projects they believe will be most impactful. Voting will close in June 2011, and the projects with the most votes will be awarded funding for implementation. The Expert Panel members will also select 7 ‘Expert Picks’ – projects that are deemed to be deserving of special recognition. There are a total of 32 awards available, ranging from €10,000 to €100,000, totalling €1 million.

Vestian Global Workplace Services, a subsidiary of the Chicago-headquartered Vestian Group, today announced the launch of its services business in China. Vestian Global introduces in China, a highly effective service model, already highly successful in India; which offers solutions across the spectrum of real estate – Strategic Advisory, Transaction Advisory and Project Services whilst operating on two fundamental principles: to be end user-focused; and to build a service platform that enables high level of accountability.
The foundation of the company’s success in India is attributable to an integrated solution with innovative tools for service delivery management and evolved measurement techniques to ensure commitment towards aligning diverse real estate needs of corporations with their business objectives.

Speaking at the launch of the company’s China operations, Michael Silver, Chairman, mentioned, “The concepts of ease and accountability are central to our business philosophy as a group.
