Kevin Rudd Meets “Wicked” Doppelganger While Campaigning in Morningside
Jul 29, 2010 – Kevin Rudd, Queensland MP and former Australian prime minister took home his doppelganger, a Kevin Rudd softie by Wicked Child Designs, while campaigning at the Morningside Festival in his local electorate of Griffith last Saturday.
The tongue in cheek felt toys known as softies are handmade by local textile artist and owner of Wicked Child Designs, Teneale Muir.
“It’s great to see someone coming face to face with themselves in doll form for the first time,” said Muir. “I think Mr. Rudd was a bit surprised, but he had a laugh about it and we had a good chat about some of his economic policies.”
Prime Minister Julia Gillard also met herself in doll form at a recent event at the Bleeding Heart Gift Shop in Brisbane. She was too busy moving forward to comment.
Customers are snapping up the irreverent softies which include Julia “I blew the budget on my hair” Gillard, Kevin “Cuddly Ruddly” Rudd and a Tony Abbott doll sporting the infamous budgie smugglers. According to Muir, the most popular political softie is Julia Gillard but she is also starting to get requests for Senator Bob Brown, leader of the Greens.
Muir puts the softies’ appeal down to a national sense of humour when it comes to politics.
“I think even while we’re passionate about the politics we don’t always take the politicians quite so seriously. Some people want the softies as gifts but I’ve heard others joke about taking to them with voodoo pins,” said Muir.
