Max Healthcare Organizes India’s First Workshop On Bariatric & Metabolic Nutrition
Max Institute of Minimal Access, Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery, today successfully concluded the country’s first ever Bariatric and Metabolic Nutrition Workshop 2010.
Ritika Samaddar, India’s first specialist nutritionist, addressed issues on nutrition requirements for bariatric patients, both before and after surgery.
The workshop, attended by 25 renowned dieticians from across the country, provided a holistic view on morbid obesity and bariatric surgery, which happen to be the only way to bail a morbidly obese patient out from the doldrums of further co-morbidities. Detailed interactions, case studies as well as films related to the issue highlighted the significance of dietary monitoring for a bariatric patient.![max_health[1]](http://readit.in/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/max_health1.jpg)

Dr. Pradeep K. Chowbey-Director of Max Institute of Minimal Access, Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery-provided valuable insights into the link between morbid obesity, bariatric surgery and related life-long monitoring of dietary and nutritional habits for a bariatric patient. “People need to understand that bariatric surgery is a medical surgery and not a cosmetic surgery. It is not performed to only lose weight but it becomes imperative for a morbidly obese person when the comorbidities attached with excessive weight make life almost impossible. And nutrition therapy by a specialist is very important for bariatric patients,” he said.
Ritika Samaddar, explaining the importance of nutrition therapy for bariatric patients, said, “We live in an age of specialization which calls for tailor-made diets to suit the various specialties within healthcare. Life-altering procedures like bariatric surgery entail specialized dietary and nutritional requirements. Dietary monitoring is a life-long process for a bariatric patient.”
Ritika Samaddar’s experience in nutrition and dietetics spans more than 14 years and she is currently chief dietician at Max Healthcare and a member of the Horlicks Nutrition Academy.
Dr. Pradeep K. Chowbey, Director of Minimal Access Surgery, Max Healthcare, is among India’s foremost bariatric surgeons. He featured in the Guinness Book of Records 1997 and Limca Book of Records (consecutive editions 2000 to 2009) for performing the most minimal access surgeries
